Standing lookout for unwanted Canadian Geese
The Dockside has been invaded by Canadian Geese. There have been times when upward of 50 have been on the lawn along the water, in front of the Maine House. With mild temperatures and no snow they find this a great place to hang out. Unfortunately the mess they leave behind is unbelievable! In a scene from the movie Caddy Shack we are batting to persuade them to go somewhere else. So far our Down East scarecrows complete with reflective CD’s are doing the trick! They stand watch 24/7 in rain and snow with no complaints! I wonder if we can get them to make beds?

Good news on airfare to Maine ! Southwest Airlines has announced that it will start flying to Portland, Maine as well as Boston and Manchester,NH. This can only help reduce fare and add convenience. http://portland.wcsh6.com/news/news/102759-southwest-airlines-way-pwm

Pictured below are a couple of important guys that help keep the Dockside maintained at a high level. Scott and Zach Chase are the carpenters who repair just about everything at Dockside. They show up in November and leave in April. Scott has been with us for over 35 years.
Siding, windows decks, leaking roofs and more.
In the project pictured above they are replacing rotten siding out side of room 115 in the Lookout. BUT they had to remove the stairs going to room 119 & 120 to get at the problem. Nothing is simple!
This is a continuation of a series about what we do at the Dockside over the winter months.

Fred gives room 113 in the Quarterdeck a refresh; He has stripped the old wall paper and painted the ceiling, walls and woodwork. There will be new upholstered chairs and lighting.
One of the most common questions I get is “what do you do all winter?”
Lots actually, we work on room renovations, maintenance and other projects that we can’t do when there are guests around. We just performed one of the more interesting ones: taking down the flag pole in front of the Maine House. It hasn’t been down in over 5 years and needed to be painted. Good thing we did because we found some rotten spots that need to be repaired. Yes, the flagpole is wood.

The Guest Quarters finished up the 2011 season with yet another memorable storm. Most of New England received an unseasonable Nor’easter last Saturday night, knocking out power and dumping heavy wet snow. Along the immediate coast we didn’t have nearly the problems that interior areas still are recovering from. We did get 5 inches of snow and 40 mph gusts, more January like than October.
Here is a picture Sunday of the gazebo!!
