Rich history and tradition characterize southern Maine in more ways than one. From famous cuisine to gorgeous weather to Fort McClary State Park, York, ME, has a lot to offer any vacationer. When it comes to the history of the region, perhaps nothing embodies it like Fort McClary State Park. You’d be remiss to not pay it a visit during your stay here. Here’s what you’ll see there!
Fort McClary State Park Offers a Look Back Into History
When you come up to Fort McClary State Park, you’ll immediately notice the unique military architecture perched atop a hill overlooking the rest of the grounds. In addition to this, you’ll see the remains of a wall and other buildings that show the evolution of the aforementioned military architecture. Named after Major Andrew McClary, a Revolutionary War hero who died at the Battle of Bunker Hill, the current fort is the latest iteration of the bastion defending the mouth of the Piscataqua River, downriver from Kittery. While the fort, itself, saw little real combat, it stands metaphorically today as it did through history: a rampart to the region’s most dire periods of war and revolution. The different past versions of today’s fort were present through the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War I.
